Euro 2008 - Salzburg
Salzburg
Salzburg is known throughout the world as a festival city and for its historic Old City, which nestles within an impressive landscape. With a population of 140,000, the city is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists from all corners of the globe every year. UEFA EURO 2008 will represent the culmination of a whole series of successful major sporting events held in Salzburg.

A city in baroque style on the banks of the Salzach River, Salzburg is the fascinating capital of Land Salzburg. The town and the river were named after the early residents who earned their living in the region's salt mines. The city is laid in an outstanding setting and is an architectural treasure by itself. One sight which cannot be forgotten is the Baroque spires of the old town, with the Festung Hohen Salzburg fortress rising in the background. The old town is included in UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage Site. Festung Hohen Salzburg, which is the landmark of Salzburg, is the largest intact fortress in Central Europe and it offers some breathtaking views of the city. One of the main attractions in the old town is without any doubt the nearby formidable Salzburg Dom. In it, there is a Romanesque font where was carried out the christening of Mozart. Schloss Mirabell is one of the others important sites with its beautiful gardens created by the baroque master Lukas von Hildebrandt. At the foot of Mönchsberg one can admire the so called Festival District which has two largely famous festival halls and the Felsenreitschule - a masterpiece designed by Fischer von Erlach in 1693 in baroque style. The widely known Schloss Hellbrunn is situated south of the center of Salzburg's old town where one can see the famous Wasserspiele section which contains many ingenious trick fountains and water-powered figures. This "heart of Europe" is the city of Mozart, who was born here in 1756 and owes huge part of its fame to the composer. With this association with the composer's city, Salzburg continues to attract lots of tourists and tourist revenue. One can visit this favorite son's birthplace, the Geburtshaus, an old burgher's house.
