Euro 2008 - Klagenfurt
Klagenfurt
Klagenfurt is the most southern areal capital in Austria and the historic, economic and cultural center of Carinthia. The city, with about a hundred thousand full-time residents, is situated sixty-one kilometers away from Italy, thirty-one kilometers from Slovenia, about 300 km from Vienna and 140 from Graz. It's a sleepy city that is a great stop-over point if one is driving around Carinthia's lakes. Klagenfurt is also a useful base of explorations to Magdalensberg, the Cathedral of Gurk, St. Veit, Hochosterwitz Castle and the lakes in the area. The city center is rimmed with streets, laid down where once the city's walls stood. The center of the downtown of the modern city is Neuer Platz, presided over by a fountain in the shape of a ferocious dragon called Lindwurm. This is and the city's symbol. There are various modern boutiques and places to go shopping and also many traditional outdoor café areas in the historic areas and courtyards of the city. It can get very hot in the peak of summer, but if one is here, can do as the Klagenfurters do and retread to the nearby Worther Lake in the western sector of the city.

If you like castles and ruins, Klagenfurt is just the right place to enjoy a castle stroll. The town is surrounded by a total of twenty-three well-kept and fantastically restored castles of all shapes and sizes. Many of them were built around the 12th century with splendiferous knights' halls, pinnacles, towers and dreamy parks. If one would like to stay overnight in a real castle and be served like a king - there is no problem! St. Georgen am Sandhof is a castle boasting a four star hotel and Hallegg Castle is a 3-star hotel. Many of the castles have been brought back to live and one can rediscover long-forgotten times.
